The World Sees You ~ How?

Some Assessments Outweigh Others

Have you played in corporate America or found personality tests or other assessments fun or interesting?  You have probably heard of or  taken assessments such as the Myers Briggs; DISC; Strength Finder; my personal favorite, the hailed, 360-degree feedback (a hint of sarcasm – J); or a plethora of other tests available in the market.

These assessments all have a place, but need to be evaluated on the merit for why they are taken, the credentials of those reviewing the assessment, how the results are delivered, and the follow through after the test is over.

Based on the results, it is very easy to over personalize the assessment, especially if administered improperly.

360-Degree Feedback Is Limited if Not Done Right

How the world sees you

In my career as a financial executive, one of the final assessments at my J-O-B was the 360-degree feedback.

The 360 is an evaluation of how those assessing you perceive your interactions with them and how you present yourself to them. I was delivered the results by the company President, who had no formal training in moderating the assessment and I quickly became defensive and upset by the results.  Yes, it was not my “normal” favorable results.

The feedback from the assessors was highlighted by my last interaction with the division managers where I was not my normal self and made the decision to hold them accountable for their financial performance and spending patterns in attempt to make some marked changes to the cash position and profitability of the company.

Yes, I could have and should have handled that meeting better and more effectively, I was direct and bold in the interaction – I stepped out on my limb to make a point and be heard. Little did I realize how that meeting would be the basis for my entire review and the basis of responses from the managers on my 360 Review.

With the passage of time, I now see where the communication and process broke down. Those giving their assessment of me based their responses on the last interaction I had with them.

A plan to improve the interactions and relationships was not outlined, nor was a way to enhance my personal development discussed.

The process felt more like a witch hunt versus a training tool.  Given those premises, it added to the mounting reasons that led to my exit from the J-O-B world of corporate.

Recently, I was given the opportunity to take a new assessment – The Fascination Advantage®.  This assessment gives an analysis of How the World Sees You through the science of fascination and shows you at your best.

I took the assessment, and at first was uncomfortable that it identified me as “Victor”. However, as the next week went by, I was full of realizations of how this does seem to be the response people have had to me over my life, even when, in my mind, I had done nothing to earn this response. Knowing it now, I am thinking of ways to use this information in my professional life, and I am very excited about it.

My primary is Mystique, with a secondary of Innovation. I can see why it is so hard to pin down “who I am” for my About Me page on my web-site…. because I am mysterious!
